Der Farmer aus Texas (1924/25, Joe May)


The centenary of the founding of the Weimar Republic offers an excellent opportunity to revisit the work and influence of one of the most important filmmakers in Weimar cinema.
Director and producer Joe May (1880–1954) moved from theater to Cinema with a short film for a theatre revue in Hamburg. He went on to start his own film studio in Berlin-Weißensee and a studio lot in Woltersdorf. During his career, he discovered and worked with many talented people (Fritz Lang, Thea von Harbou, E.A. Dupont, Paul Leni and many others) and pioneered film-genres such as the detective film, melodrama, and cinematic riddles. Primarily, he is renowned for monumental films such as: Veritas Vincit (1918/19), the adventure series Die Herrin der Welt (1919), the exotic two-part Das indische Grabmal (1921), and Tragödie der Liebe (1922/23). After masterpieces such as Asphalt (1928/29) and sound-film comedy Ihre Majestät die Liebe (1930) the Nazis forced him into exile.
The Festival and Conference will not only focus on films by Joe May and those by his wife Mia (1884-1980) and daughter Eva (1902-22) but also on films by his “pupils”, international contemporary films and pre/remakes.
cinefest is also working in association with an internet portal by the Bundesarchiv with extensive pictures, posters and documents from the Weimar Republic.
cinefest –  15th International Festival of German Film Heritage is organized by CineGraph Hamburg and Bundesarchiv with the cooperation of many international institutions. cinefest presents film classics, lost treasures, and rediscovered milestones. It serves as a forum for cineastes, film-historians, archivists, and technicians in the context of a public festival. 

The 31st International Film History Conference is integrated in the festival in Hamburg.
A select portion of the film program will also be screened in Berlin, Prague, Wiesbaden and other cities.
