Von Apps und E-Books. Neue Chancen für die Filmpublizistik?

— Miriam Hofheinz, Bookwire, Frankfurt
— Michael Töteberg, Rowohlt Medienagentur, Hamburg
— Wolfgang Wildgen, Semiotician, University of Bremen
Moderation: Olaf Brill, CineGraph

Digital books and Applications bring traditional medias such as written words, pictures, sound and film together in an interactive environment. With the introduction and accessibility of e-readers and apps, e-books have become for many both a part of everyday life and an attractive alternative to the traditional book. Will we soon read books only in a digitalized form? What prospects do they offer and might they cause us to lose an integral part of our culture? What opportunities do e-books and apps offer, especially for publications about film?

Using the example of "The Soldier’s Courtship" - a short film from 1896 - the opportunities, chances and risks of digital restoration in comparision with analog restoration will be discussed. Both the extensive posssibilities of digital restoration and the wide range of views and opinions which question where he limits should be set will be looked into.

— Marlo Boelens, Bundesarchiv-Filmarchiv, Berlin
— Thomas Pfeiffer, Kinemathek Hamburg e.V.
— Tankred Howe, Deutsche Wochenschau GmbH, Hamburg
Moderation: Andrea Dittgen, Film Critic, Saarbrücken

In recent years, both public and private archives have been creating an increasing number of high quality, digitalized copies of their films. In the forum, we will discuss some of the many issues this has brought up: who digitalizes what and why? How is it decided which films should be digitalized? Who finances the digitalization? How are the films marketed? How will cinemas, organisations and private individuals gain access to these jewels of film heritage? And what will happen to the films that are not digitalized when a growing number of cinemas are only equipped with digital projectors?

The Cinefest-Forums are organized in cooperation with Goethe-Institut Hamburg, Verband der deutschen Filmkritik and FilmDienst
