Broken Language
Exiled Film Authors and Writers

cinefest 2016 looks into the careers of script writers and authors who were forced to go into exile due to their race, religion, or political orientation, from a variety of situations which included but were not limited to Nazi-Germany. Successful authors often experienced a particular struggle reestablishing their careers in a foreign country. Writing styles that had been considered sophisticated and artistic were not immediately accepted in different cultures and languages. Nevertheless, some were able to reestablish themselves in a foreign language and culture, often combining their cultural experiences with the customs of the foreign country to create interesting new mixed genres.

A few emerged as directors or producers, for example Billie/Billy Wilder, Hermann Kosterlitz/Henry Koster, or Rudolf Katscher/Cartier. Hamburg born Felix Joachimson established a career in the USA writing scripts for musicals and as a TV producer under the name Felix Jackson.

The festival and conference will focus on works that were made before, during, or after authors were exiled into different linguistic environments and will look into them in both cultural and historical contexts.
