Film and literature have long been fascinated with people of varying nationalities and socioeconomic backgrounds meeting in grand hotels or cruise ships. Conflicts and stories emerge from a complex constellation of people and offer a nearly limitless number of suspenseful plots within a microcosm of society. Fundamentally, the situation is different. People are travelling and most often are in places which are not familiar to them. Hierarchies among both the staff and guests often break down, and identities often turn out to be deceptive.
cinefest 2015 will screen a selection of films from silent cinema up until the present which share a theme: people meet by chance in a relatively confined space, experience something together, and then go their separate ways. These films will allow us to look through a magnifying glass at (film)historical reflections of the time when the films are set and made. The festival and international film conference will investigate the forms and methods in which these stories are told and place them in a cultural and historical context.
